Punch is Not just for breakfast any more! Punch originates from the Hindi word
“panch,” which means five. The reason for this name is because the
original punch had five ingredients in it: tea, arrack, sugar, lemons,
and water.
This drink was so loved by England, and thus New England, that it came to be served at many get-togethers, sometimes being drunk straight out of the punch bowl. Many dinners did this, where the punch bowl was passed from person to person before eating, and each took a swig of the lovely drink.
In the new world, punch was a favorite in Virginia, New York, and Pennsylvania, where it was often drank before lunch and dinner, drank with dinner and with ladies, and drank until bedtime.
But we won’t bore you much longer with the history of Punch. Suffice it to say that punch was very popular, with different punches created and named for anything the people could still pronounce.
Needless to say, today there is a plethora of punch recipes to choose from. There are punches with Champagne, with Rum, with Vodka, with beer, with schnapps, with wine, and many other spirits. There is the infamous Jungle Juice served at frat parties, and more sophisticated Champagne Punches with fruit, and classics such as Sangria.
